The Heroines

Lula M. Calhoun

is honored with a Brick from Denise D. Curry Sherman.

Lula M. Calhoun Lula, it has always been the little things that you do for everyone that makes you the special person that you are. It is with love that I honor you, Ms. Lula Mae Calhoun as a heroine in my life.

Lula was born in Guthrie, OK and was raised in Wichita. She attended school in Wichita and finished her education at the Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, AL majoring in Tailoring and Fashion Design. Many Wichitans may be acquainted with her through the fine workmanship in alterations, either through her own business of 18 years, or through the better clothing stores in the Wichita area. In addition to her entrepreneurial spirit, she worked at Boeing Military Aircraft for 18 years. She has since retired to enjoy the fruits of her labor, her 10 grandchildren and the activity that she loves most... traveling.

Lula, there are so many things to admire about you. But what stands out most is the dedication you have for your five children and the love and attention you give to family and friends. You always extend yourself to those who may not know the closeness of family by sharing yours. I remember spending my earlier years with you trying to figure out who was who at the family reunions, but later learned that it didn't matter. When other family members seized the opportunity to tease me and confuse me more, it was you who came to my rescue. And it was you who always made my favorite dish... candied sweet potatoes, at every family meal. Some of my favorite vacations were taken with you and I have the fondest memories of them. But most importantly, you always took the time to tend to the special needs of all of us, regardless of the trouble we may have caused you.

Words cannot express my gratitude to you, and I hope to speak for the rest of the family by saying that you are our own HEROINE.
