The Heroines

Mary Eloise Hartong

is honored with a Large Paver from Bill and Linda Hartong.

I am honored and touched that my children have honored me by placing my name in the Plaza of Heroines. It is a total surprise!

Yesterday I reached the age of 85. Looking back, my greatest achievement was and is raising two wonderful, productive children: my son, Dr. William Allen Hartong, a gastroenterologist in Leawood, KS, and my daughter, Karen Louise Lee, of Iola, KS, school psychologist for the Allen County schools. My early life began in Kingman and Pratt, KS, as Mary Eloise Harrell. My parents moved to Wichita in 1925. I was educated in the Wichita schools and earned a business degree and was employed by The Palmer Oil Corporation. In 1937, I wed William Albert Hartong, who died in 1997.

I was employed during the 60's and 70's by Wichita State University where, after 16 years, I retired from my position as secretary to the Dean of Liberal Arts in 1976.
