The Heroines

Sandra F. Engelhardt

is honored with a Brick from the College of Education Staff Association.

Sandra F. Engelhardt When you meet Sandra Engelhardt on the street or shopping at the mall, she is the picture of health. She is bubbly and excited about life - no one would suspect she has a care in the world.

In actuality, Sandra is very ill. She has cancer, a cancer gone terribly awry. Only those close to Sandra know about her illness and only her immediate family knows the full details .

Whether Sandra is teaching children in school, working with church youth or organizing Sunday school, volunteering for some charity or chatting with friends and acquaintances, she listens intently to others, hearing what is said and what is not said. She connects to their concerns, expressing sincere respect for their ideas, empathy for their situation, and joy in their accomplishments. Even through her pain, Sandra is kind and gentle, listening patiently to a child's story and doing quiet little acts to make others feel good. One cannot be around her very long without feeling her humanity and excitement for life.

The College of Education Staff Association salutes you, Sandra Engelhardt, for extreme bravery under fire! We present this "purple heart" in the form of a brick in the Plaza of Heroines as a small token of our esteem. We think you are a very special lady, a role model for us all; your courage in fighting for your life gives each of strength. Thank you for giving us a lesson in life!
