Yvonne Slingerland
is honored with a Brick from Mary Estes.
Yvonne Slingerland is a native Kansan. She was born in Wichita and has lived throughout her life in several Kansas communities. For the past 32 years, she has resided in Wichita.
I have known Yvonne for 36 years. We first met at professional meetings for teachers in the areas of health, physical education, and recreation. Through the years, we have become close friends and have shared many experiences in our lives. I admire and respect Yvonne for many reasons. I will reflect on some of these reasons.
Yvonne strives for excellence in everything that she does. I have never known anyone who is more dedicated to doing their best at all times. This dedication is reflected in the many accomplishments of her life.
During a 40 year teaching career, Yvonne was an exceptional teacher and mentor for thousands of students. She taught and coached at the high school level for 13 years and retired after 27 years on the faculty at Wichita State University. She is a true professional and is respected by others in the field of education. Yvonne's students, friends, and family have honored her contributions to their lives by endowing a scholarship at WSU in her name.
For three years, Yvonne's mother was terminally ill with cancer. Yvonne was totally committed to caring for her mother throughout this difficult time. She provided unselfish support and love that demonstrated her sincere devotion to her mother. Giving of herself so completely, Yvonne ensured that her mother knew how very much she was loved by her daughter.
I am looking forward to adding many more years of fun and joy to our lives as best friends. I am proud to honor Yvonne Slingerland in the Plaza of Heroines. She is a real heroine to many people.
