Patricia Terrill Holloway
is honored with a Medium Paver from Richard B. Holloway, Kevin B. Holloway, and Lisa D. Holloway.
Patricia Jean Terrill was born on June 15, 1932, to Edna and Newton Terrill of Douglass, KS. Both parents were lifelong teachers and education administrators. Pat completed her elementary and high school education in Douglass, becoming Valedictorian of her class. Following her parents example, she pursued a Bachelor's degree in Education at Wichita State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in June 1954. At Wichita State she was a leader in many campus activities and was selected as an Honor Woman for her Senior year.
In August 1954, Pat was married to Richard B. Holloway of Wichita, who was a 1950 Engineering graduate of WSU.
Following graduation Pat taught third grade at Irving Elementary School in Wichita for one year. She found her preferred vocation in the Children's Room at the Wichita Public Library, where she worked until her son, Kevin, was born in July 1957. About a year later she was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, which influenced her life from that time on.
A daughter, Lisa, was born in July 1962. Despite her declining health, Pat worked with patience and kindness to raise her children. She was a Den Mother with Kevin's Cub Scouts and helped with Lisa's Brownie Scouts. She was active in PTA and volunteered with the Head Start program for two years. She helped organize a library at St. Thomas Aquinas school and was always finding interesting ways to help children learn.
Pat was a multi-dimensional person, with many varied interests. She enjoyed music, especially opera and the Wichita Symphony, and played the piano for herself, friends and family. She was an avid gardener, appreciative of both the beauty and bounty of nature. She loved art, and was accomplished herself in oil, acrylics, charcoal and pastels.
She loved cats, particularly Siamese and Burmese, and helped others to understand, enjoy, and care for them. Neighbors called her "the cat lady" and over the years brought her dozens of stray and homeless cats. Pat tended to them and found good homes for all of them.
Pat Holloway's most distinctive traits were those of quiet strength, dignity, serenity and patience. While diabetes slowly ravaged her body, Pat bravely and selflessly remained focused on the needs of others.
Mrs. Holloway died on April 21, 1983, from complications of diabetes and subsequent kidney disease. She will always be loved and admired by those who knew her.
