Betty Barnes
is honored with a Brick from the U.S.D. 264 Board of Education.
This tribute is dedicated to Betty Barnes, fellow teacher and friend.
Betty began teaching in 1971. She taught third grade for several years and then became a reading teacher. During this time, she became known as a fine lady and a great educator. She served as a model for new teachers in the district.
Betty demonstrated her dedication to children and education through the years by working beyond the school day with students in need. She willingly helped children who had difficulty even if they weren't identified as students who qualified for her program. She would keep parents informed and shared ideas they could use to help their children. Betty was dedicated to making her students feel good about learning and tried to ignite in them a love of reading.
She was always willing to sort through data and educational information, summarize it, and share it with her colleagues. She spent many hours implementing strategies that would enhance her reading program and encourage schoolwide growth.
Fellow teachers looked to her as a mentor who answered endless questions, calmed the fears of new teachers, and always had an encouraging word. Her love of reading is evident in her advice: "When all else fails, read to your students." Betty was always willing to give of herself and to share her resources and expertise.
You could count on Betty to take over a classroom for a teacher who had to attend a funeral or had an appointment. She was known as a very caring and compassionate person who had a smile for everyone and served as a confidant.
Betty retired from teaching in May of 1998. She will be missed.
