Dorothy Haner
is honored with a Brick from Pat Rogers, et al.
Dorothy Haner is our heroine, our role model and an inspiration to our lives. As Dorothy moves to California to be closer to her family, we want to proclaim the positive impact she has had on our lives.
Dorothy is especially remembered for her passionate advocacy for people who are homeless and mentally ill, the downtrodden and disenfranchised. She is also remembered, however, as our friend, co-worker and supervisor.
Dorothy started as an LPN, but in her 40's pursued a Bachelor Degree, and then went on to complete a Master's Degree in Social Work when she was in her 50's. We looked on with pride.
As her educational background broadened, she moved into coordinator and manager roles. Her intelligence, articulation of dynamics, leadership, commitment, willingness to battle unpopular causes and loyalty to staff and consumers made her a respected and cherished supervisor.
Through the years she has promoted equality over inequality, community welfare over rugged individualism, a simplistic lifestyle over consumerism, and inclusion of all over exclusion of some. She has supported peace and nonviolence and has raised our conscience about feminist issues and environmental concerns. She has given us perspective on the lives of the nondominant races, cultures, and religions of others in the United States and abroad.
As our cherished friend, she has listened patiently to our confidences and insecurities and given us her loyalty, caring, honesty and warmth. She has challenged us and yet supported us. She has been a willing community volunteer with few people knowing of her many deeds. She has repeatedly, generously given of herself, her home and her resources.
We will miss you Dorothy: your humor, smile, laugh, touch, and hugs. We hope you return soon and often to visit and rejuvenate our friendship and our lives.
